Il segreto

Due ragazze scoprono
il segreto della vita
nel verso inatteso di
una poesia.

Sono io, che non conosco il
segreto, ad aver scritto
quel verso. Esse
mi dissero

(tramite una terza persona)
di averlo trovato
ma non che cosa fosse
e nemmeno

quale fosse il verso. Senza dubbio
ora, dopo più di una settimana,
avranno dimenticato
il segreto,

il verso, il titolo della
poesia. Le amo
per aver trovato ciò
che io non riesco a trovare,

e per avermi amata
per quel verso che ho scritto,
e per averlo dimenticato
cosicché

mille altre volte, finché la morte
non le trovi, possono
scoprilo di nuovo, in altri
versi

in altri
accadimenti. E per
averlo voluto conoscere,
per

aver supposto che esista
un tale segreto, sì,
per questo
più di tutto.

Denise Levertov (nata il 24 ottobre 1923) fu una poetessa britannica naturalizzata statunitense.
Scrisse e pubblicò 24 raccolte di poesia, oltre a critiche e traduzioni e fu insignita di numerosi premi e riconoscimenti.
Morì nel dicembre del 1997.

“The Secret / Il segreto” di Denise Levertov contiene una meditazione sul potere della poesia, descritto come la “scoperta” di un segreto nel “verso inatteso di una poesia” fatto dalle due ragazze ingenue.
È una sorta di epifania, un momento in cui possono apprezzare il potenziale della poesia e goderlo come sorpresa, come esperienza preziosa e come qualcosa che cambia momentaneamente la loro vita.
L’autrice di quel versi non sa quale sia il segreto, sebbene lo abbia scritto lei in una delle sue poesie.

Two girls discover
the secret of life
in a sudden line of
poetry.

I who don’t know the
secret wrote
the line. They
told me

(through a third person)
they had found it
but not what it was
not even

what line it was. No doubt
by now, more than a week
later, they have forgotten
the secret,

the line, the name of
the poem. I love them
for finding what
I can’t find,

and for loving me
for the line I wrote,
and for forgetting it
so that

a thousand times, till death
finds them, they may
discover it again, in other
lines

in other
happenings. And for
wanting to know it,
for

assuming there is
such a secret, yes,
for that
most of all.

Denise Levertov (born on 24 October 1923) was a British-born, naturalised American poet
She wrote and published 24 books of poetry, and also criticism and translations and was the recipient of a lot of awards and honours
She died in December 1997 from complications of lymphoma.

“The Secret” contains a meditation on the power of poetry, described as the “discovery” of a secret in a “sudden line of poetry” made by the two naïve girls.
It is a kind of epiphany, a moment in which they can appreciate the potential of poetry and enjoy it as a surprise, as a precious experience and as something that momentarily alters their lives.
The author of that line does not know what the secret is, although she wrote it in one of her poems.

I think their discovery concerns the importance of reading, capable of affecting our feelings, and even though they have already forgotten that secret, they will re discover it over and over again in different places and occasions throughout their lifetimes.
The last thing that Levertov writes is that she loves those girls most of all for assuming that secret existed, and for wanting to know it.
